Weatherby Value FAQ

What's a Weatherby Magnum?

Roy Weatherby developed proprietary high-velocity cartridges in the 1940s-50s — .240, .257, .270, 7mm, .300, .340, .378, .416, .460 Weatherby Magnum. They use belted magnum cases and significantly higher pressures than standard cartridges. The .257 Weatherby Magnum (a high-velocity .25 caliber) is the most popular for deer/antelope; .300 Weatherby Magnum is the elk and African plains-game standard.

Are Mark V rifles still made in California?

No — Weatherby moved production from South Gate, CA to Sheridan, WY in 2018-2019. Pre-2019 California production is preferred by collectors for build quality and lineage. Current Sheridan production maintains the Mark V design and quality.

What's the Vanguard's relationship to the Howa?

The Vanguard is built on the Howa 1500 action and uses Howa-supplied receivers. Weatherby finishes them with their own barrels, stocks, and triggers in Wyoming. Mechanically, a Vanguard and Howa 1500 are very similar; the differentiation is in finishing, stock options, and chamberings.

How collectible are Crown / Royal grade Weatherbys?

Original-condition Crown and Royal grade Mark Vs from the 1960s-1980s in collector chamberings (.460 Weatherby Magnum, .378 Weatherby Magnum) regularly trade $5,000-15,000+. Roy Weatherby's personal-engraved presentation guns can run $40,000-100,000+. Among the most-collected American hunting rifles.
