Rock Island Armory (RIA) is the brand name of Armscor's 1911 line. Armscor was founded in 1952 in Marikina, Philippines. Rock Island Armory 1911s are produced under license at Armscor's Philippine facility and are imported to the U.S. by Armscor USA (Pahrump, Nevada). RIA 1911s are among the most-affordable 1911s on the U.S. market — base models start around $400-500 MSRP. The Tac series and Pro series add features and polish at higher price points.

Rock Island Armory Value FAQ

Are Rock Island 1911s reliable?

Yes for the price point. RIA 1911s use forged steel frames and slides — same metallurgy as more expensive 1911s. Fit and finish is less refined than Wilson Combat or Nighthawk, but functional reliability is well-established. The lifetime warranty covers virtually all defects.

What's the 22 TCM cartridge?

RIA's proprietary high-velocity rifle-pressure cartridge (.22 caliber, ~2,000 fps from 5" pistol barrel). Bottlenecked design. Convertible to standard 9mm Luger with a simple barrel/recoil spring swap. Niche cartridge but interesting; available primarily from Armscor/Federal.

Is BBR a real high-capacity 1911?

Yes — RIA's BBR (Baby Rock series) uses a redesigned grip frame that accepts 14-round .45 ACP magazines. Maintains 1911 ergonomics and trigger feel. Comparable to Para Ordnance P14-45 design. MSRP $700-900.

Are Rock Island Armory products in the same league as Colt?

Not quite — RIA is positioned as the value-tier 1911 ($400-800) vs Colt's mid-tier ($900-1,500) and premium-tier custom 1911s ($2,500-5,000). For the price, RIA delivers competitive value. For collector value or ultimate fit-and-finish, Colt and custom 1911s have the edge.
