Used Howa Values 2026:
Every Model, Every Caliber.

Howa Machinery was founded in 1907 in Nagoya, Japan. Howa produces civilian centerfire bolt-action rifles primarily on the Model 1500 action, sold in the U.S. through Legacy Sports International. The Howa 1500 is also the foundation of the Weatherby Vanguard. The Mini Action (introduced 2014) is a short-action variant for .223 Remington and similar small-caliber cartridges. Howa rifles are mid-tier in price ($500-900) but offer premium-tier accuracy.

Howa Value FAQ

Is the Howa 1500 the same as the Vanguard?

Same action, same Japanese steel, same cold-hammer-forged barrels. Vanguard adds Weatherby finishing (US-made stocks, US barrels in some configurations, individual zero verification). Howa-branded versions are typically $100-200 below equivalent Vanguard MSRPs.

Are Howa rifles really sub-MOA?

Yes — Howa 1500s commonly group at 0.5-0.75 MOA with quality factory ammunition. Action is exceptionally well-machined. Trigger is two-stage and adjustable. Many shooters consider the Howa 1500 the best value in the bolt-action market.

What's the Mini Action used for?

Cartridges that don't need long-action capacity — .223 Remington, .22-250, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, .350 Legend, 6mm ARC. The Mini Action is shorter and lighter than the standard 1500, making it ideal for varmint and youth-sized hunting rifles. Good for travel-friendly rifle builds.

Where is Howa imported in the US?

Legacy Sports International (Reno, Nevada) is the exclusive U.S. importer. Customer service and warranty work runs through Legacy. The Howa name and the 1500 design are also licensed by Smith & Wesson for the M&P bolt-action.
