Benelli Armi was founded in 1967 in Urbino, Italy by the Benelli brothers (originally a motorcycle company). Acquired by Beretta Holding in 2000. Benelli's inertia-driven action (patented 1986) revolutionized the shotgun world — fewer parts than gas guns, virtually maintenance-free. The M1, M2, M4 Super 90, Super Black Eagle (SBE) series, and the M1014 anchor the lineup. The U.S. Marine Corps adopted the M1014 (M4 Super 90) as the M1014 Joint Service Combat Shotgun. What is inertia-driven action?
Patented by Benelli — the entire bolt assembly compresses a spring during recoil, then drives back to cycle the action. No gas tubes, no pistons, no maintenance. Trade-off: doesn't cycle reliably with very light loads. SBE3 mostly solved this with revised inertia spring weights.
Is the M4 the same as the M1014?
Yes — the M4 Super 90 is the civilian semi-auto version of the M1014 Joint Service Combat Shotgun (adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1999). Same gas-piston action (note: M4 is gas-operated, not inertia, unlike most Benelli shotguns).
Are SBE3 worth the premium over SBE2?
Mostly yes — SBE3 (2017+) has improved ergonomics, the BE.S.T. corrosion treatment option, and supports 3.5" Magnum shells more reliably. SBE2 (2003-2017) is still excellent and trades $200-400 below SBE3 used.
