Barrett Firearms was founded in 1982 by Ronnie Barrett in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Barrett is the world's leading producer of .50 BMG semi-auto rifles — the M82, M82A1, M107A1, and the M99 single-shot. The MRAD has become the standard medium-bore (.300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, .300 Norma) precision rifle for U.S. Special Operations. The REC7, REC10, and REC10 SBR are Barrett's gas-piston AR / DMR offerings. Barrett rifles are at the top of the U.S. and global precision rifle market.

Barrett Value FAQ

Are .50 BMG rifles legal for civilians?

Yes in 49 of 50 U.S. states (California is the exception — banned in 2005). Federal law treats .50 BMG as a standard rifle cartridge. Barrett M82A1 and M107A1 sell to civilian buyers; MSRP runs $9,500-12,000. Single-shot M99 runs $4,500-6,500.

What is the MRAD?

Multi-Role Adaptive Design — Barrett's modular bolt-action that allows tool-less caliber conversion via swappable barrels and bolt heads. Won the U.S. Army's Precision Sniper Rifle program in 2019 (designated Mk22). Civilian variants run $5,500-8,000.

Are .50 BMG rounds expensive?

Yes — .50 BMG ammunition runs $4-12 per round depending on grade. M33 Ball is the entry-level training round at ~$4. M2 AP (armor piercing) runs $6-10. Match-grade M33A1 or Hornady A-MAX runs $7-12. Casual shooting gets expensive fast.

Where is Barrett based?

Murfreesboro, Tennessee (south of Nashville). Barrett was acquired by NIOA Group (Australia) in 2023 but continues U.S. production. The company supplies the U.S. Army (M107A1), Navy SEAL teams (M82), and 60+ partner nations.
