The Most Important Ammo Decision
Why Your Ammunition Choice Matters as Much as Your Gun
Most new gun owners focus entirely on the firearm and treat ammunition as an afterthought. This is backwards. For defensive use, the ammunition you choose determines how effective your firearm is at stopping a threat. A quality Glock G19 loaded with FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ball ammunition is less effective defensively than the same pistol loaded with quality Hornady Critical Defense hollow points — sometimes dramatically so.
The Bottom Line Up Front
Use FMJ (Full Metal Jacket / ‘ball’) for range practice — it’s cheaper, feeds reliably in all pistols, and there’s no reason to use expensive defensive ammo for target shooting. Use quality JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) for any defensive purpose — carry, home defense, or self-protection. Never use FMJ for defense.
FMJ vs JHP — The Technical Difference
How Each Bullet Actually Works
FMJ (FULL METAL JACKET)
A lead core completely jacketed in copper or steel. Nose is pointed or rounded — does not deform on impact.
✓ Cheaper — $0.22–$0.35/round for 9mm
✓ Feeds reliably in all pistols
✓ Less fouling than lead rounds
✗ Over-penetrates — passes through body
✗ Narrower permanent wound channel
✗ Does not dump energy efficiently
✗ Not recommended for defensive use
JHP (JACKETED HOLLOW POINT)
Lead core with a cup-shaped hollow at the nose. On impact, hydraulic pressure causes the bullet to expand to 1.5–2x its original diameter.
✓ Expands to 2x diameter on impact
✓ Dumps energy more efficiently
✓ Reduced over-penetration risk
✓ Larger permanent wound channel
✓ FBI-approved for defensive use
✗ More expensive ($0.50–$1.50/round)
✗ Some older guns need break-in

The Over-Penetration Question
Why Hollow Points Are Safer in Homes
The Real Risk of FMJFMJ ammunition regularly penetrates through a human body and continues through multiple walls. A 9mm FMJ can penetrate 18+ inches of ballistic gelatin (far exceeding FBI’s 12-16″ standard) AND pass through multiple interior walls. Every bullet you fire is YOUR legal and moral responsibility — including where it ends up.
How JHP Reduces This RiskQuality 9mm JHP ammunition expands to approximately 14–16″ of penetration in ballistic gelatin and fragments on impact with hard barriers. The expanded bullet is less likely to pass through a wall and harm unintended parties. This is the primary reason law enforcement uses JHP — reduced collateral risk.
The Shotgun Exception12 gauge #00 buckshot produces 8–9 .33-caliber lead pellets — each penetrating 12–18″ of tissue. The spread at home defense distances (10–20 feet) is only 2–4 inches. Buckshot over-penetrates as much or more than pistol FMJ. Use reduced-recoil #1 buckshot for better pattern and penetration balance.
FAQs
Ammo FAQs
Is hollow point ammo legal?
Yes — in most US states, hollow point ammunition is completely legal for civilians to purchase, possess, and use. New Jersey is a notable exception with restrictions on carrying hollow points. Several other states have minor restrictions. Most law enforcement agencies mandate hollow point use — it would be strange to prohibit civilian use.
What is the difference between JHP and +P?
JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) refers to the bullet construction. +P refers to increased chamber pressure — +P ammunition is loaded to higher than standard pressure for higher velocity. The two are separate designations. +P JHP is common: Federal HST 9mm +P is a jacketed hollow point loaded to +P pressure for higher velocity expansion.
Should I practice with hollow point ammo?
Test your defensive load (50–100 rounds) in your specific pistol to confirm reliable feeding, then practice primarily with FMJ to reduce cost. Some pistols are picky about JHP feeding — you must confirm your defensive load functions before trusting it. Use the same weight bullet in FMJ as your JHP for similar point-of-impact.
What JHP ammo does the FBI use?
The FBI has used several loads over the years. Current standard is Federal Premium HST 9mm 147 gr +P — available to civilians at $24–$30 per 20-round box. This is one of the most tested defensive loads ever manufactured.
