The Vietnam War — A Firearms Turning Point

The Vietnam War was a pivotal moment in small arms development. The US transitioned from the M14 to the new M16 in the middle of a hot war — with disastrous early results. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong carried AK-47s that functioned reliably in the jungle humidity. The lessons of Vietnam shaped American military firearms doctrine for the next 50 years.

US Remington 870 (12ga) Jungle/tunnel use Pump shotgun in close-quarters jungle
NVA/VC AK-47 / AKM Service rifle Superior jungle reliability vs early M16
NVA/VC RPD Light Machine Gun Squad automatic 7.62x39mm belt-fed — reliable and common

US Special Forces CAR-15 (XM177) CQB/HALO Shortened M16 precursor to M4
US SEAL Stoner 63 System Various Eugene Stoner’s modular system — loved by SEALs

The M16 Disaster — and Fix

Why the M16 Failed — and How It Was Fixed

The Problem: Army Changed the PowderThe original AR-15/M16 spec called for IMR 4475 powder. The Army switched to a ball powder to use existing machinery — the new powder fouled the direct impingement system dramatically. Result: jams under fire.
No Cleaning Kits IssuedThe Army’s propaganda that the M16 was ‘self-cleaning’ meant early deployments included no cleaning kits. Soldiers in the field couldn’t clean the rifles that were fouling from ball powder.
The Fix: Chrome Lining and Cleaning KitsThe M16A1 (1967) added a chrome-lined barrel and chamber, returned to correct powder specifications, and issued cleaning kits. Post-1967 reliability reports were excellent. The fundamental design was sound — the Army had introduced the problems.

FAQs

Vietnam Firearms FAQs

Was the M16 a failure in Vietnam?
The early M16 (XM16E1) had documented reliability failures caused by powder changes and lack of maintenance training. The M16A1 (1967) with chrome-lined barrel, correct powder, and cleaning kits was reliable. The design was sound; the Army’s implementation choices caused the problems.
Did AK-47s outperform M16s in Vietnam?
In jungle conditions with poorly maintained weapons, the AK-47 had better reliability due to looser tolerances and simpler gas system. The M16A1 post-1967 was equally reliable with proper maintenance. Accuracy advantage went to the M16.
