How We Selected These Picks

Duck hunting places unique demands on shotguns: semi-autos must cycle steel shot reliably (harder on gas systems), weather resistance is critical in wet conditions, and 3″ or 3.5″ chambers are standard for magnum loads. These picks all excel in the field.

Can I use steel shot in any shotgun?

No — lead chokes and older fixed-choke shotguns cannot safely handle steel shot. You need a steel-shot-safe choke (modified or more open) and a modern proofed barrel. All new shotguns (post-1990s) are designed for steel. Check your specific shotgun’s manual.

What choke should I use for duck hunting with steel shot?

Modified or Improved Cylinder for most duck hunting distances (20–40 yards). Never use a Full or Extra Full choke with steel shot — dangerous pressure buildup can occur.
